Rama Chandran
Rama Chandran was appointed Head of Marine in August 2015. He has over 40 years of industry and marine underwriting experience.
Prior to QBE, Rama worked as a Class Underwriter, Marine and Energy for Argo Global Underwriting Asia Pacific. Before that, he was the Head of Marine, SVP for Asia Capital Reinsurance Group Singapore, managing a team of Underwriters for both Facultative and Treaty business covering Asia, GCC, Central Asia, Turkey and Australia/New Zealand. Rama is a marine engineer by trade and worked for Neptune Orient Lines Singapore prior to joining the insurance industry. He came ashore to join Ritchie & Bisset (Far East) as a surveyor and, in 13 years with that firm, rose to the position of Managing Director.
Rama holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Leicester and is a member of the Society of Naval Architect & Marine Engineering, as well as the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union. He is a qualified Marine Engineer Officer (Class 1 Motorship) under the Merchant Shipping
Act.
Rama was the Chairman of the Ocean Hull Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) from 2018 until 2022 and is currently a member of the committee. Rama is also a member of the Marine Committee at the General Insurance Association of Singapore and the Legal and Insurance Committee at SSA and Local Chapter at Singapore Arbitration Centre.
In 2020, Rama was named the sixth most influential person globally in Marine Insurance by Lloyd’s list.
